My wife gets full credit here. We were almost done with season two of Game of Thrones and I was comparing Dothraki to Klingon when my wife says; “Is Dothraki the new Klingon?” Is GoT that big? Perhaps it is, or will be soon enough. I felt a blog post coming on. But what?
First I wondered, as all fanboys might, who would win in a fight? Warf vs Drogo. I’m going with Drogo, discuss.
Then I tried to come up with a clever Klingon/Dothroki joke, but fucking christ, I’m not a comedian. I have a new respect for these joke writers guys.
Here is my favorite after a few searches:
How many Klingons does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to change it. One to stab him in the back and take all the credit. Or None. Klingons aren’t afraid of the dark.
So here is the bulk of the post. Let’s play a little game. I’ll give you a native language phrase and it’s translation in English. You tell me what language it is.
First one should be easy.
[EXPAND Goodbye = Qapla’!]
Klingon. Literally, “Success!”
OK. Try this one.
[EXPAND May your rival have an ugly neighbor = jIl moH ghajjaj jaghHomlIj]
Ha Ha, it’s Klingon.
[EXPAND You do honor to me. = Yer chomoe anna.]
This one is Dothraki. Not sure I would get this one.
[EXPAND What the fuck! = Ki fin yeni!]
Dothraki, Literally, “by what failure.”
[EXPAND How are you? = Hash yer dothrae chek?]
Dothraki, Literally, “Do you ride well?”
OK. Last one.
[EXPAND That’s great news! = buy’ ngop! ]
Klingon Literally, “The plates are full.”
So is Dothraki the new Klingon. Probably not. But it’s fun to speculate.
